Sewer Pipe Lining: Trenchless Sewer Line Repair

In some cases, traditional sewer line repair is unavoidable. Unfortunately, traditional sewer line repair often disrupts landscapes, damages driveways, and inconveniences homeowners, as it can take four or five days to complete, not including the time it takes for the homeowner to restore their property afterwards. And it can easily cost upwards of $20,000 after yard restoration and replacements are included. At Spotted Dog Excavating Sewer & Water Repair in Colorado Springs, we offer sewer pipe lining as a possible alternative to traditional sewer line repair.

With trenchless sewer line repair, we can avoid many of these inconveniences and even save our customers time and money. The “trenchless” or “pipe liner” process utilizes specialized liquid epoxy resin and a specialized “calibration tube” to create a brand-new sewer line within the existing one. The calibration tube is flexible and can be directed through various pipe diameters to ensure it flows in the right direction. It can also do a “tight sweep” if necessary. Once the calibration tube is ready, the liquid epoxy resin solution can be mixed up and insolubilized by blowing it up under pressure and heating it.

Once the “cure” is underway, your brand-new pipe liner that has been created will become extremely durable. It will expand as needed to form a snug fit around the unique shape of your existing pipe. It will not be affected by tree roots, will not corrode, and is expected to last for 50 years. Additionally, your flow capacity can be improved by 10%.

What Is Trenchless Sewer Line Repair?

Trenchless sewer line repair is a method for fixing or replacing a section of sewer pipe, for the most part, without the need for excavation. If you have a sewer line running across multiple properties and under sidewalks, driveway brickwork, and community gardens, locating, accessing, and then restoring those surface features can become a very expensive task. With trenchless methods, small access points are dug as needed, rather than creating massive trenches.

What is Sewer Pipe Lining?

Sewer pipe lining is a trenchless method of repairing existing sewer lines that rehabilitates pipes without the need for digging. It is especially useful in metropolitan areas where excavations affect the surrounding roads and walkways; minimal-digging repairs extend the life of durable lines.

Epoxy Resin – This jelly-like compound sticks to the original pipe and expands when exposed to heat, forming a new pipe. The new lines are joint-free and have increased flow efficiency compared to the old pipe. The new resin-made pipe should be strong enough to withstand all temperatures, chemicals, and general sewer use.

Video inspection technology is used to assess the interior of the existing pipe. The cleaning stage involves the use of a hydro jetting tool or a mechanical device to remove obstructions, primarily tree roots and tuberculation. Additionally, removing these obstructions enables the smooth application of the liner.

After cleaning, the epoxy is applied to the liner using an inversion drum that carries the liner. The liner has essentially become a temporary pipe inside the existing pipe, expanding with boiling water or continuous steam injection. The curing process will form a new, dry, and stronger pipe in a few hours.

Finally, following the last inspection, we evaluate the new pipe with a camera. Reinstatement of services may occur after the cure period has elapsed, if needed.

Advantages of Sewer Pipe Lining

Traditional repair methods often require extensive “trenching” or “digging,” which drives up the cost due to the required labor, heavy machinery, and potential re-landscaping after the project is completed. In contrast, “trenchless” methods typically require less labor, materials, and resources. However, the significant savings will come from not having to replace concrete, plants, or landscaping, as well as numerous other benefits, making trenchless replacement methods more cost-effective in many cases.

The products used in “trenchless sewer line repair” technology are heavy-duty “plastics” (they look and feel like hard PVC material) that will last. Sewer pipe lining materials generally outlast traditional materials. This is because the plastics used are not susceptible to rusting or “root-infestation.” They are highly durable, and homeowners will most likely never have to address these issues ever again.

Spotted Dog can provide sewer pipe lining services to residential and commercial customers in Colorado Springs and throughout El Paso County.
